Born in 2021, Chestnut is a captive bred Harris's hawk (Parabuteo unicinctus). As a falconry raptor, Chestnut actively hunts rabbits and pheasants from September to April. During the late spring and summer, Chestnut's offseason is spent resting and molting.
In the wild, the Harris's Hawk is a social bird that often lives in small family groups who communally hunt. When hunting or perching they may move their tail from side to side or spread or close their tail feathers, which may be silent messages to other hawks in their group.
